Glass Street Plans Unveiled

Over the past year, Glass House Collective has worked to build momentum, good-will, and a sense of unified effort within the Glass Street community. Through promotion efforts and temporary animations, over 150 residents and local business owners have participated in the re-visioning of Glass Street.

From this process, we have recommendations for improvements to the district’s buildings and public spaces and a distinctive and community-owned brand for Glass Street all based on the values and ideas of community members. All of this is on display for the public at Glass House Collective.

Glass House Collective has had the pleasure of partnering with organizations and individuals who have committed to funding the below items outlined in the plan:

+ Benches and bike racks on Glass Street (in partnership with Public Art Chattanooga, ArtPlace)
+ Three new bus shelters in the proposed locations: Dodson & Glass, N. Chamberlain & Glass, and Dodson Ave in front of the East Chattanooga Recreation Center (in partnership with CARTA, Public Art Chattanooga, Artplace)
+ Replacement of sidewalks to accommodate new pedestrian lighting and trees (in partnership with the City of Chattanooga Neighborhood Services and Department of Engineering)
+ A pocket park at the corner of Awtry and Glass Street (in partnership with Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise, the Trust for Public Land, and Glass Farms Neighborhood Association).
+Three matching grants for improvements to building storefronts and the installation of artisan and craft signage (in partnership with Artplace America)

We anticipate these projects to be fully completed by early to mid-Summer. With construction for the community space to begin in April. The benches, bike racks, bus shelters, and craft signage will be unique to Glass Street by engaging artists in the design.

While these larger projects take time, there are things we can do in the near-term. Glass House Collective is coordinating a Better Block event on February 23rd and are providing seed funding for the implementation of the eight projects outlined in the How To Guide. The projects will include the installations of public art, tree planters, community banners, pop-up shops, and more. We need your help. If interested, please contact info@glasshousecollective.org.
